Justice Gillian D. Marriott was appointed to the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta on June 16, 2016. She is currently the Co-Chair of the Court’s Diversity, Inclusion and Access Committee and a member of the Canadian Superior Court Judge’s Association’s Access to Justice Committee. Justice Marriott has been a member of the Board of the Canadian Forum on Civil Justice since 2014. Prior to her appointment she practiced family law as Counsel with Widdowson Kachur Ostwald Menzies LLP. She was the Executive Director of Pro Bono Law Alberta from 2009 until 2016. At the time of her appointment she was the President-Elect of the Law Society of Alberta.
Justice Marriott is also a Past President of the Alberta Branch of the Canadian Bar Association and was a member of both the National CBA’s Access to Justice and Pro Bono Committees. Justice Marriott was an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Family Law at the University of Calgary, from 2000 to 2016. She served on the Board of the Legal Education Society of Alberta and the Advisory Committee of the Alberta Law Information Society. She was a founding member of the Board of PBLA and of the Children’s Legal and Educational Resource Centre and is a past member of the Board of the Immigrant Access Fund. Justice Marriott was appointed Queen’s Counsel in January 2010. In 2011 she received the “Women in Law Leadership Award—Community”. In 2015 she was awarded the Cecilia Johnstone Award for Outstanding Service for her involvement, dedication and service to CBA – Alberta. Justice Marriott was also the 2015 recipient of the WK Moore Award from the University of Calgary for outstanding contribution to the Faculty of Law.
